___"Prominentes ruinas Maya aparecen por toda Centro América. Esta imagen en particular es un plano de la Galería Oriental del Palacio de Palenque, mirando hacia la Sala A. Los mayas construyeron este palacio, un complejo de varios edificios que fueron conectándose entre sí, durante un extenso periodo de tiempo. La Sala A era una de las construcciones más recientes, construida posiblemente a finales del Siglo VII u VIII. En primer plano se pueden apreciar algunos indígenas reposando alrededor y encima de las ruinas, quizás descansando después de haber limpiado o excavado un sitio arqueológico.
__El Palacio demuestra que los mayas eran en efecto arquitectos de gran talento. Para construir este edificio debieron valerse de estrategias arquitectónicas complejas e innovadoras. Ingeniosamente, implementaron elementos tales como nichos pequeños en sus bóvedas para reducir el peso del techo y un avanzado sistema de drenaje para eliminar el peso excesivo del agua. El resultado fue el espléndido edificio que aparece en el dibujo de Catherwood".

__"Outstanding Maya ruins are found all over Central America. This particular image is the view from the East Court of the Palace in Palenque, facing towards House A. The Maya built the palace, a complex of many connected buildings, over a long span of time. House A was one of the newer buildings, perhaps built in the late 7th or early 8th century. In the foreground of the image, indigenous people repose around and upon the ruins, perhaps on a break from clearing or excavating the site.
__The Palace gives evidence the Maya were accomplished architects. For this building to exist the Maya needed to use complex and innovative architectural strategies. Ingeniously, the Maya included such elements as small niches in the vaults to lessen the weight of the roof and an advanced drainage system to eliminate the weight of excess water. The result is the fascinating building shown in Catherwood's drawing".
